Mauricio Pochettino could take over as the new West Ham in what would be a game-changing move, Football Insider can reveal.

That is according to ex-Leeds United and Coventry City striker Noel Whelan as he assessed the possible candidates to replace Manuel Pellegrini.

The Chilean is set to be sacked if West Ham lose to Southampton tomorrow evening in what would be an eighth defeat in 10 league matches.

As revealed by Football Insider this week, ex-Hammers managers David Moyes, Sam Allardyce, Alan Pardew and even Harry Redknapp are on a shortlist of interim contenders to take over for the rest of the season, while Eddie Howe and Sean Dyche are more long-term contenders.

"None of the short-term candidates will excite West Ham fans too much," Whelan told Football Insider. "Moyes has a good Premier League record but fans wouldn't be licking their lips if he got the job again.

"I can see Pochettino at West Ham, actually. Why not? If West Ham have ambition - and they tell us they do - who knows what's possible.

"He's available, they have the money to pay him what he earned at Tottenham and he might fancy it for the rest of the season.

"I've heard his name mentioned. It could be huge for West Ham if they get him, a total gamechanger."

Pellegrini is fighting to keep his job after West Ham sunk to their seventh defeat in nine league matches on Monday night night, a 3-1 defeat at home to manager-less Arsenal.

The Hammers travel to St Mary's Stadium for a 5.30pm kick-off tomorrow that is set to decide the manager's fate.
