Jon McLaughlin set for extended spell on the sidelines as new details emerge at Rangers - expert
Paul Robinson has insisted Jon McLaughlin's "indifferent" form will lead to a permanent return for veteran shot-stopper Allan McGregor in the Rangers goal.
The former England goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed McLaughlin, 35, wasn't been "consistent enough" after assuming the first-choice role at the start of this campaign.
McGregor, 40, was restored to the starting line-up for the 3-0 loss against Napoli in the Champions League on Tuesday (14 September).
The former Hull City man saved Piotr Zielinski's penalty and, as per Sofascore, made seven saves - including five from shots inside the 18-yard box.
McGregor also made four saves (as per Sofascore) as Rangers returned to winning ways with a 2-1 Scottish Premiership victory over Dundee United on Saturday (17 September).
McLaughlin is part of Steve Clarke's Scotland squad ahead of a triple-header against Ukraine and the Republic of Ireland later this month.
Robinson suggested McGregor was unlucky to have been dropped by Giovanni van Bronckhorst in the first place after his "fantastic" performances in the 2021-22 season.
He told Football Insider’s Dylan Childs: “He’s [McLaughlin] not played particularly well this season,”
“McLaughlin’s form has been very indifferent, and McGregor has been very unlucky not to come into that side earlier.
“For me McGregor has now got to be playing – because for me, McLaughlin hasn’t been good enough.
“He’s not been consistent enough.
“Regardless of his age, McGregor was fantastic last year and he didn’t put a foot wrong against Napoli in the Champions League.”
