McAvennie lambasts Rangers stars after Giovanni van Bronckhorst reveal via Sky

Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Frank McAvennie has suggested Giovanni van Bronckhorst's philosophy is not the reason why Rangers are struggling of late.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Celtic striker suggested the players are to blame for the downturn in form.

Van Bronckhorst's side got their first win this month on Saturday (17 September) with a 2-1 Scottish Premiership victory over Dundee United.

The win followed three successive defeats where the Gers conceded 11 goals.

As quoted by Sky Sports (14 September), the Dutch boss said there is "nothing to change" about his philosophy despite criticism following back-to-back defeats.

McAvennie agreed that the philosophy is not the source of the Light Blues' problems.

"It was working for him up until the last couple of games," he told Football Insider.

"Even I was praising him for getting them to the Champions League group stage, it was a wonderful achievement. I don’t think it’s the system, I think the players look off it. That’s nothing to do with the system.

"I don’t like this zonal marking nonsense, I don’t like all that. So maybe I would change that. I don’t care who you are if you’re standing and somebody’s got a run on you, they’ll beat you because they're running. There’s that many nationalities now that people can’t talk to each other, they don’t know what each other are saying.

"It’s a strange one for Rangers but they don’t become a bad team overnight. The games are coming thick and fast now so they’ve got to be careful and keep everyone onside."
