Journalist: Newcastle attacker set for surprise loan exit after official transfer statement

Newcastle United striker Adam Armstrong is set to be shipped out on a surprise loan to Blackburn Rovers after his deal with Bolton Wanderers came to an end, according to a journalist. The Chronicle's Lee Ryder has claimed on his

that the 20-year-old forward will be making the move to the former Premier League champions, now in League One. His report follows the official confirmation on Newcastle's official Twitter account and website of the expiry of a six month loan deal with Championship side Bolton, meaning that he will be making the surprise drop down a league for the second half of the season.

The youngster made 23 appearances across all competitions and netted three goals during his time with the north west club, and has 21 outings for Newcastle's senior side since making his debut.

Football Insider verdict

While Armstrong has shown he has what it takes to succeed in League One, having been prolific with Coventry City and chipping in more while on loan at Barnsley last season, he needs to be making the step up if he wants to succeed at St James' Park. Dropping down to join Blackburn Rovers just screams of him heading back into his comfort zone after a tough time with Bolton, but it is the ability to push yourself which turns a good footballer into a great one. Whether Armstrong's not got the mental strength to make the next step, or if Newcastle feel he needs to build his confidence up, this is not the right move for the youngster, and will harm his chances of future success.
