Club insiders at Newcastle United have been raving over the development of young goalkeeper Freddie Woodman and believe he is the best prospect to have come through the club since Andy Carroll, according to a report.
The Chronicle claim on their website that the 20-year-old has been turning heads at the club’s training ground not only with his talent between the sticks but with his approach to the game, with the England under-20 shot stopper said to be always looking to improve.
The reports states that those in the know on Tyneside are as excited about his future as they were striker Carroll, who made his Newcastle debut over a decade ago as a 17-year-old in 2006 and now has nine England caps and 194 Premier League appearances to his name.
However Woodman, who was awarded the golden glove for best goalkeeper on the way to picking up the under-20 World Cup with England in the summer of 2017, is yet to make his first team debut, although has found himself with six unused substitute appearances this season, sitting behind both Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot in the pecking order.
It is stated that manager Rafael Benitez, who chose to offload Matz Sels on loan and Tim Krul permanently over the summer, has been impressed with Woodman’s development, and considered handing him his place in the starting XI after Elliot picked up an injury prior to the clash against Brighton, with the club’s short term priority reportedly ensuring his future is well managed.
