Kalvin Phillips backed for Man City exit 'now' after journalist's update - pundit
Frank McAvennie has insisted Kalvin Phillips should have left Man City last month.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker suggested that Phillips has not been working hard enough in training.
The 27-year-old has struggled for game time since his summer arrival at the Etihad and has made just three Premier League appearances this season.
According to The Athletic‘s Sam Lee (2 February), a summer exit for the England international is not off the cards.
Phillips' current contract runs until 2028.
Back in December Pep Guardiola slammed the midfielder in the press for being "overweight" and "not in the right condition to train" after returning from the World Cup with England.
McAvennie was surprised Phillips didn't leave during the January window.
"I think he should have left now," he told Football Insider.
"I would have wanted to leave in January. When the manager comes out and says you are not fit enough you have got to take a look at yourself and ask if he is right.
"Sometimes when you are not playing you get your head down and you do not trying in training as hard, you do not put the hours in that you should be doing. I think he is a good player Phillips."
Phillips made 23 appearances for Leeds United last season.
In those outings he scored one goal and provided one assist.
