Keith Hackett fumes at 'stupid' Nico O'Reilly footage - 'Thomas Tuchel must have a word'

Published on

Thomas Tuchel must address Nico O'Reilly's headloss during England's dramatic win over Mexico in the World Cup round of 16.

That is according to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee, Keith Hackett, who exclusively told Football Insider that, while a yellow card was the right outcome, it could have been more.

In the 71st minute, both O'Reilly and Jorge Sanchez had their names taken following a confrontation between the two full-backs.

New footage has since emerged from the sidelines, which is doing the rounds on social media, of O'Reilly appearing to land an elbow on his opponent.

Despite Sanchez's protestations, pointing out a cut on his lip, no further action was taken, much to the delight of a former FIFA referee.

With Tuchel already facing problems at right-back, the Three Lions' head coach will want to avoid any further issues on the opposite flank, such as a suspension.

Nico O'Reilly may have had huge regrets on another day

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Hackett was delighted by the decision of a yellow card, but did criticise O'Reilly for his "stupid" actions.

"I hope that his manager will have a word in his ear to ensure that he is focused, and does not do a stupid act of flashing his elbow at an opponent," he said.

"The referee judged this one accurately, issuing Nico O'Reilly with a yellow card. It's the correct call and, no doubt, supported by VAR."

There has certainly been a reduction in the number of yellow and red cards, and on another day or in the Premier League, he might have been having an early bath.

What are Thomas Tuchel's other concerns?

The Three Lions are now in the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals, so understandably, supporters are excited about potentially putting an end to decades of hurt.

However, with Erling Haaland's Norway up next on Saturday, 11 July, Tuchel's side have a huge task on their hands at the Miami Stadium.

With Reece James injured and Jarell Quansah sent off against Mexico, the right-back position is a huge concern against the Norwegians.

Jordan Henderson is now expected to miss the rest of the tournament after freak injury at full-time, but he was unlikely to feature much.

The centre-back partnership of Marc Guehi and Ezri Konsa has also looked a little rocky in some moments, so Tuchel could make some changes in defence.
