Exclusive: Major Casilla transfer news after being told his new role at Leeds
Kiko Casilla is expected to push for a transfer to Spain this summer after being told he will be the Leeds United number two next season, Football Insider understands.
The goalkeeper, 33, has lost his previous No1 status after serving an eight-match racism ban, which opened the door for Illan Meslier to shine in the starting XI.
Leeds have subsequently signed the Frenchman, 20, on a £5million permanent deal and told Casilla, as revealed by Football Insider earlier this week, he will be second choice in the Premier League next season.
This has thrown his future at Elland Road, which was already uncertain after his suspension, into new doubt.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Casilla is likely to try and quit Leeds in favour of a return to his homeland.
He joined United on a free transfer from Real Madrid in January of last year after agreeing a four-and-a-half year deal that runs until 2023.
It won't be easy for the keeper to secure a new club as he is Leeds' top earner on a deal worth £40,000-a-week.
Marcelo Bielsa is open to the experienced Spaniard staying at United and fighting for his position.
But Casilla's new secondary status is a huge development and playing second fiddle to a 20-year-old is unlikely to appeal.
Meslier started 10 of the last 11 matches of United's Championship-winning campaign.
He made a big impression as he conceded just four games as Bielsa's side cantered to the title.
Casilla has made 57 Leeds appearances, conceding 55 goals, since his arrival 18 months ago.
