Leeds United fans have given a mixed reaction to Jonny Howson's performance as he returned to Elland Road with Middlesbrough on Sunday.

Howson, 29, played 90 minutes as Boro fell to a 2-1 in West Yorkshire thanks to goals either side of half-time from Whites attackers Pablo Hernandez and Ezgjan Alioski.

The midfielder left Leeds for Norwich in 2012 after rising through the academy ranks at Elland Road.

However after five years at Carrow Road, Howson moved to Leeds' rivals Middlesbrough in the summer for £6million to join up with Garry Monk, who had not long exited the club.

It wasn't a happy return for both Howson and Monk though as they fell to a defeat to Thomas Christiansen's side.

Britt Assombalonga gave them hope of earning a draw by scoring a debatable penalty in the latter phases, but the Whites defended well and got the job done to halt their slump down the Championship table.

Leeds fans weren't overly impressed with Howson's display on his return to Elland Road, with many saying that the midfielder was completely anonymous in the away side's midfield.

Here is a selection of their tweets:

Howson has made 16 appearances across all competitions for Middlesbrough this season since arriving in the summer.

He played over 200 times in his spell with Leeds, where he earned himself a spot in the hearts of most fans.
