Frank Mulhern has signed for Huddersfield on a short-term contract - and Leeds fans have reacted with confusion on Twitter.

Huddersfield announced on their official academy Twitter account on Tuesday that the 20-year-old striker had moved to the John Smith's Stadium weeks after quitting Leeds.

The Championship promotion hopefuls revealed that Mulhern has joined their Under-23s squad for the remainder of the season.

The transfer comes weeks after it emerged that Mulhern had begun at trial at Leeds' bitter rivals, with Huddersfield revealing on their website last month that Mulhern had been included in their Under-23s side that beat Crewe Alexandra.

Many Leeds fans had high hopes for the young striker and some are keen for more information about why he left Elland Road in unexplained circumstances.

Others suggested Huddersfield would have tied Mulhern down to a longer-term deal if they were more convinced by his capabilities.

The Republic of Ireland Under-19 international was praised by former Elland Road academy chief Paul Hart after he had signed a two-year professional contract in the summer of 2015.

Mulhern was a regular for the Leeds Under-23s team last season and then agreed a loan to non-league Southport earlier in this campaign.

But the young forward struggled to make an impact at the Merseyside outfit and returned to his parent club after making a single appearance.

The youngster, who was on Huddersfield's books for four years in his youth, now has the opportunity to resurrect his career at a club who are battling Leeds for promotion to the Premier League.

Huddersfield are third in the Championship with 65 points, four ahead of fourth-placed Leeds, who have played one more match.

Garry Monk's side are next in action on Friday night when they travel to Birmingham for a league clash at St Andrews as they aim to consolidate their place in the play-offs.
