Man City will snub Stefan Ortega and sign a new number one goalkeeper if Ederson leaves the club.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who remains well-connected within the game, insisted that the 32-year-old will remain the number two goalkeeper behind a new arrival.

This comes amid growing speculation over the future of Ederson after the Brazilian was axed from Pep Guardiola's side and has now missed three of their last four games.

Now, Robinson claimed that interest has remained strong and Man City could be tempted to sell as a result of his weakened influence on the starting XI.

However, his exit would trigger them to move for a new signing in goal despite Ortega's recent spell in the team given the German's age.

Now, Robinson has echoed that view and claimed City will not rely on Ortega to be their first-choice but will instead look to sign a new number one.

"Look at Ortega's age, he's not the future," he told Football Insider.

"He's a very, very good goalkeeper in his own right and he deserves an opportunity.

"City were conceding too many goals and the manager thought it was time for a change in goal.

"When you're the number one goalkeeper, sometimes you can't see the wood through the trees, you need the manager to put his arm around you and give you a couple of weeks' rest.

"I've got no doubt that Ederson will be back in goal for City whether it's before or after Christmas.

"Ortega is good with his feet, but he's not as good as Ederson, and it'll only be a matter of time before Ederson comes back into the team.

"But it shows Pep is not afraid to make big decisions, and it reignites the talk of Ederson going to Saudi.

"It gives you the idea that he's not as indispensable as we might have thought he was.

"In terms of Ortega being the number one, I can't see it. He's capable of being the first choice but look at his age and his career.

"If Ederson was going to leave the club, they're not going to ride on Ortega, they're going to get another number one to rival him."
