Man United boss Ruben Amorim is set to assess Harry Maguire's performances before deciding whether to extend his contract.

Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at United during their most successful period and remains very well-connected there, exclusively told Football Insider that the 31-year-old will be given the opportunity to impress his new boss in the coming weeks.

The centre-back has less than a year remaining on his current contract at Old Trafford, and as things stand, will leave for free in the summer of 2025.

Erik ten Hag had no plans to renew his deal, as Football Insider revealed on 20 October that the defender would wait to see whether he would play more regularly under a boss coach.

Maguire played 60 minutes in United's 2-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates, and turned in an impressive display as part of a new-look back three.

It was his seventh league appearance this season, and his first since suffering a calf injury in the 0-0 draw against Aston Villa in October.

As a result, he has had to wait for his chance under Amorim, but the centre-back was able to display his defensive abilities as well as his talent in possession despite the final score.

Ruben Amorim to make Harry Maguire contract decision at Man United

The former scout, who has a wealth of experience working closely with players, managers and agents at the top level, insisted that the defender will have to play his way into earning a new contract by showing Amorim what he brings to the team.

"Maguire has come back at the perfect time, right when they needed him," he told Football Insider.

"Amorim will be able to assess him over the next few days to see where the fits in the team.

"He'll have the make the decision about whether he'll be a regular in the team going into the future or if they'll be better off looking elsewhere.

"It'll be up to the manager to make the final call on agreeing a deal.

"If he's impressed by what he sees from his performances in the team, then they'll give him a new deal.

"But he's one of the biggest earners at the club, because he was bought for such a big fee and he was England's starting centre-back.

"So if the club want to free up some of that money, they'll have to let him go."
