McAvennie blasts Liverpool chiefs after 'shocking' Henderson update

Frank McAvennie

Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Frank McAvennie insists there's no chance of Jordan Henderson leaving Liverpool this summer.

The former West Ham hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to an update in the England midfielder's situation.

On 19th July, The Athletic reported that no progress has been made in negotiations over a new contract for the Liverpool lynchpin.

It is claimed both Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid are monitoring Henderson’s situation.

Henderson, 31, recently celebrated a decade at Anfield and is loved by fans after helping the club lift the Champions League and Premier League in recent years.

McAvennie insists the Anfield captain won't leave this summer and took aim at the club for failing to offer him an acceptable contract.

"PSG buying Henderson? Not a chance," McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

"I know the press are here to do a job but Henderson to leave Liverpool?

"Come on now, he's 31 years old. He spent a lot of last season injured.

"That's not a sound investment, not that PSG have ever been careful with money.

"But they have Marco Veratti, they have Gini Wijnaldum, why do they want Henderson?

"Liverpool will want a mega fee as well. I just can't see Liverpool ever letting him go.

"That's shocking. They can't give him a new deal? I don't get it."

Henderson only made 28 appearances in all competitions last season as he suffered numerous injuries.

He spent some of the season playing as a central defender due to the club's unprecedented injury crisis.
