McAvennie can't believe Rangers have signed Lundstram

Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Frank McAvennie can't understand why Rangers have signed John Lundstram.

The former Celtic striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims the midfield is the last position the Gers need to improve.

On Monday (5th July), Rangers confirmed Lundstram has signed a three-year deal with the club after leaving Sheffield United.

The 27-year-old was released by Sheffield United last month after rejecting fresh terms.

He made 28 appearances last season as the Blades returned to the Championship after an impressive first season back in the top flight.

McAvennie has admitted he can't criticise the Gers' ability to sign quality players for free but he insisted cover is needed elsewhere.

"I don't get that, I really don't," McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

"I know it's another free transfer and I won't criticise that. How many midfield players does he [Gerrard] want?

"They have too many as it is, I don't get it. It's the last position Rangers need to strengthen, the last thing they need.

"They are going to be fighting on all fronts next season. They are still disappointed with how they did in the cups last season.

"I don't know if he'll start, after the season he's had. It's a strange one for me."

Lundstram leaves Brammal Lane with eight goals and nine assists in 120 appearances across all competitions.

He was a key player as the Blades achieved promotion to the Premier League during the 2018-19 season.
