McAvennie: Celtic fans 'will turn on the players now' after big announcement
Neil Lennon will be remembered for all of the good he did for Celtic rather than for the debacle of this season, according to Frank McAvennie.
The Parkhead legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, warned the players that they will face the wrath of the fans next regardless of whether results improve.
Celtic announced on Wednesday morning that Lennon had resigned, to bring an end to his second spell in charge of the club.
He leaves the Hoops 18 points behind Rangers in the Scottish Premiership after a turbulent season both on and off the field.
Despite this campaign's struggles, McAvennie is adamant Lennon will be remembered as a Bhoys legend.
"I am pleased for Lenny because every time I saw him on television I worried for his health," he told Football Insider. "It was time for him to go.
"I think the fans will forget this and remember Lenny for all the good he has done for the club.
"The fans will turn on the players now because the manager has gone. Even if they start playing well, questions will be asked as to why they didn't perform better all season because they should have been performing for themselves and performing for the fans. It is not about Lenny."
In a statement on the club’s website, Lennon said:“I have worked as hard as ever to try and turn things around, but unfortunately we have not managed to get the kind of run going that we have needed.
“I have always given my best to the club and have been proud to deliver silverware to the Celtic supporters. The club will always be part of me. I will always be a Celtic supporter myself and I will always want the best for Celtic.”
