Richard Hughes doesn't want to move to Glasgow and that's why Eddie Howe will not be appointed as the new Celtic manager.

That's according to former Celtic forward Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the club's hunt for a new manager.

Hughes is Bournemouth's technical director and the Scottish Sun claim that Howe wanted to appoint him as part of his backroom team at Celtic.

Celtic

McAvennie, who lives in Glasgow and is closely connected to the club, claims his sources have told him Howe won't become Celtic's new manager after several weeks of reports.

"I don't think he'll [Howe] come now, I thought he would've got it by now," McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

"From what I'm told he's wanting a director of football and I don't think Hughes wants to come back up here from Bournemouth.

"I know he's from here, he's a Celtic supporter but I don't think he wants to bring his kids up here.

"That's the problem but at the moment it doesn't look to me like it's going to happen."

Celtic have been looking for a new manager since the end of February after Neil Lennon resigned following a 1-0 defeat to Ross County.

With the season drawing to a close, John Kennedy remains in charge of the first team ahead of a summer in which a new manager must be found and long time CEO Peter Lawwell will depart the club.
