McAvennie: Rangers have made 'huge mistake' that's cost them dearly

Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Frank McAvennie has slammed Rangers for a lack of common sense as they crashed out of the Scottish Cup on penalties against St Johnstone.

The former Celtic striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, could not believe what he was seeing as Rangers conceded a last-minute equaliser.

Deep into extra time, Rangers failed to mark goalkeeper Zander Clark as he headed the ball goalwards before Chris Kane prodded home.

That levelled the game at 1-1 after James Tavernier opened the scoring and St Johnstone went on to win the resulting penalty shootout with Clark saving two Rangers spot kicks.

McAvennie was surprised by the usually 'rigid' Gers defence as they decided to leave Clark unmarked with just seconds remaining on the clock.

"The biggest thing I've said about Rangers all year is that they're organised at the back, they're rigid," McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

"But sometimes you have to use a bit of common sense and common sense told me you should mark a 6 feet tall goalkeeper at a corner kick. What a huge mistake.

"Common sense would tell me, mark him. They didn't get anywhere near him because they were all picking up the men they were told to.

"Sometimes you have to think on your feet sometimes and adapt. You can't leave someone unmarked in the box like that."

The result effectively ended Rangers' season with only an unbeaten league campaign to aim for with three games remaining.

The Gers were dumped out of the Betfred Cup by St Mirren earlier this season which means Steven Gerrard's wait for success in the Scottish domestic cups continues.
