Alfredo Morelos wants a bumper new Rangers contract after failing to secure a blockbuster transfer during the main international window.

The Colombia international remained with the Light Blues despite intense speculation over his future and talks that took him close to joining Lille at one stage.

Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that Morelos and his representatives are seeking a new and improved deal as reward for staying.

They believe this would keep him motivated and committed for an era-defining season in which Steven Gerrard's side are trying to topple 10-in-a-row chasers Celtic.

Morelos last signed a new contract in March 2019 that took him beyond the £30,000-a-week mark.

He now wants another pay rise after Rangers failed to agree a fee with his most persistent suitor Lille during the window that shut on Monday.

It comes against the backdrop that he could yet leave Ibrox this month with Qatari side Al Duhail reportedly considering a fresh move for the striker - amid claims it could even "fast-track" him to PSG.

Morelos' current deal runs until 2023 and ensures Rangers have protected the value of their prize asset.

A new contract represents a major shock in the saga of the player's future, especially as he was dropped earlier in the season following some poor performances.

The striker has won praise from Steven Gerrard for his improved attitude in recent weeks and he's regained his position as the first choice centre-forward at Ibrox.

Gerrard selected him ahead of Jermain Defoe and Itten to start the last four Rangers matches and he has now scored five goals from 10 matches this season as well as supplied three assists.
