Newcastle United saw their unbeaten run draw to a close with a 1-0 defeat away at Sunderland on Sunday afternoon.

The Premier League's first Tyne-Wear derby since 2016 provided a typically lively occasion, but it was the hosts who came out on top at the Stadium of Light.

Newcastle fans criticised Nick Woltemade for his role in their draw away at Bayer Leverkusen in midweek, and it was his own goal that decided the game on Wearside this weekend.

Eddie Howe's men had the chance to go above their bitter rivals with a victory, but they lost out on local bragging rights, much to the frustration of their supporters.

Newcastle fans blast Anthony Elanga after derby defeat

Anthony Elanga has had a difficult start for Newcastle since his £55million move from Nottingham Forest in the summer, and things didn't get any easier for him on Sunday afternoon.

The Swede was one of several in the Magpies' squad playing in his first ever Tyne-Wear derby, and he struggled to make an impact on the game.

The winger was well-marshalled by his opposite number Reinildo throughout the first half, and was ultimately replaced by Howe as the game ticked towards the hour mark.

Elanga's performance left a lot to be desired, particularly in a game of such magnitude, and Newcastle supporters were quick to make their frustrations known on X during the game.

One fan suggested that the wideman's performance had been "absolutely abysmal," while another labelled him an "absolutely horrendous footballer."

There was even a suggestion that playing with Elanga was like "playing with 10 men," while another supporter went as far as to call him a "disgrace" to the club.

  • @D4NXIII: "Elanga should never be near the first team squad again."
  • @dannydonohoe27: "Elanga is the worst signing we have made."
  • @Liam_Ritchie: "If someone bid 50p for Elanga I'd snap their hand off."

When was Elanga's last Premier League goal?

Elanga was a hot property when Newcastle signed him in the summer, but his form has been totally non-existent since his move from the City Ground.

The former Manchester United star has just a solitary assist to show for his efforts across his 16 Premier League appearances so far this term, and his wait for a goal in the 2025-26 campaign is still going on.

The Swede's last Premier League goal came for Forest way back on 1 April, when his strike saw his team edge past Manchester United.

Since then, he has gone 24 league appearances without a goal, and he has now been involved in 1,238 minutes of Premier League football since that strike against his former club, according to FBref.

Newcastle signed Elanga hoping that he would be able to take his game to the next level at St James' Park, and instead, he has become a shadow of the player that he was at Forest.
