Newcastle United laying groundwork for huge transfer blitz - Keith Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed he expects "bigger spending" at Newcastle starting in January next year.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the Magpies are likely to "tinker" with their squad mid-season before launching into a "big reshaping" at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.

Newcastle made five summer signings but endured a disappointing window after missing out on top target Marc Guehi.

Incoming sporting director Paul Mitchell has claimed the club’s previous transfer strategy was “unclear” and “unfit for purpose” - and accused the Magpies of overpaying for some signings.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (17 September) that Eddie Howe will see his transfer input significantly reduced in the future at Newcastle.

Wyness expects 'a lot of movement' at Newcastle in 2025

Wyness claimed it will still be hard for the Magpies to "splash out" due to financial rules but insisted they will improve nonetheless.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “We’ll see some bigger spending next summer.

“There could be quite a lot of movement.

“They’ll be tinkering in January, but we could see a big reshaping of the squad particularly in the summer window.

“They’ve still got the PSR issue to solve, it’ll be hard to just splash out.

“Many people say these rules started being enforced just to stop Newcastle from spending unlimited money.

“It’ll be calculated moves, but I’m expecting an overhaul.”
