Rangers are set to inform Jason Holt he can find a new club following his return to Ibrox, Football Insider understands.

The central midfielder, 26, has spent the season on loan at League One club Fleetwood Town but has headed back to his parent club early after suffering a campaign-ending knee injury.

A club source has told Football Insider Rangers have no intention of offering a new contract to Holt, whose current deal expires at the end of next season.

The player's effort and tenacity has been recognised by Ibrox fans, who have frequently sang his name since he joined from Hearts in the summer of 2015.

But Rangers do not believe Holt has the quality to compete for a regular berth in a midfield that also includes Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara, Steven Davis, Ross McCrorie and Scott Arfield, as well as Greg Docherty, who is set to return from his own loan spell from Shrewsbury Town.

Holt could get a permanent move to Fleetwood, whose manager Joey Barton has spoken consistently of how impressed he has been by him this season.

The ex-Tynecastle ace has made 36 appearances in all competitions, which have included 29 league starts.
