Rangers have launched an ambitious bid to sign forgotten Stoke City striker Saido Berahino, Football Insider sources understands.

New Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is busy reshaping his squad at Ibrox this summer as he looks to build a side capable of challenging Celtic next season and Berahino has emerged as a top target.

A number of Championship clubs are understood to be monitoring Berahino's situation at Stoke as the player waits to see if he will figure in new manager Gary Rowett's plans going forward.

Rangers, however, are hoping to steal a march on their rivals for Berahino's signature by making enquiries to take the former West Brom hit-man on loan next season.

Rangers are in the market for striking reinforcements having added six new signings in the shape of Allan McGregor, Scott Arfield, Jamie Murphy, Ovie Ejaria, Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson already this summer.

Gerrard is keen to add to his attacking options and he feels he can help Berahino recapture his best form after a difficult time at Stoke.

Berahino has struggled for form since joining Stoke from West Brom in January 2017 and has yet to score a goal yet for the Potters.

The former England Under-21 international was excluded from the first team by former Stoke boss Paul Lambert during the final months of last season, as the club suffered relegation from the Premier League.
