Robinson: Celtic have made a 'huge' mess of Christie situation after confirmed news
Paul Robinson is "frustrated" by Celtic and their failure to secure Ryan Christie down to a new long-term deal.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and England number one claimed the 26-year-old's exit would leave "a huge financial deficit" for the club.
Christie is about to enter the final six months of his contract at Parkhead, by which point he can speak to foreign clubs regarding a pre-contract.
As quoted by The Scottish Sun, Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou revealed he "would love" the winger to extend his stay in Glasgow.
Robinson cannot believe the club have allowed one of their prized assets to run down his contract.
"It frustrates me," he told Football Insider's Dylan Childs.
"Everyone knows that he is one of their best players so to let him run down his contract, at his age, is makes no sense. The club should have been doing everything 12-18 months ago to tie him down to a long-term deal.
"Financially football is not where it was, especially in Scotland, but there is money available for the best players.
"To replace him would cost a lot more than giving him a new deal. If he leaves on a free it will leave a huge financial deficit. Nobody at Celtic wants that.
"To let a player like that go on a free, I do not understand it. I just can't get my head around it."
Speaking on Christie's future earlier this week, Postecoglou said: “In terms of his future, there’s things that I can’t control, but I’d love to keep him at the club if he wants to stay.
“Right now he’s a contracted player, he’s got a few months to go on his deal, and he’s training awfully hard."
