Gary Caldwell is in advanced talks to be the new Oldham Athletic manager after quitting Newcastle United, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The Scot, 39, announced today he has left his position as head coach of Newcastle Under-23s after three weeks.

An industry source has told Football Insider that Caldwell is close to being appointed the new Oldham manager.

That would see him replace Keith Curle, who is under huge pressure to keep his job after presiding over five defeats from six league matches this term.

The north-west outfit are second from bottom of League Two and face a major battle to maintain their league status.

Caldwell stepped into the Newcastle youth role on a short-term basis last month following the departure of Chris Hogg.

The former Wigan and Celtic centre back was most recently manager at Partick Thistle.

After helping the club avoid promotion he was sacked the following season after a poor start to the campaign.

Oldham were rock bottom of the football league until their win during the last round of fixtures.

Curle has been in charge of Latics since March this year after he replaced former Leeds man Harry Kewell.

He led the club to an 18th placed finish but the club lost their last three league games of the season.

This form has continued into this campaign with Oldham finally ending their winless run last time out against Sutton United.
