Birmingham City are preparing to sack Lee Bowyer at the end of the season, Football Insider understands.

But a Birmingham City source has told Football Insider that club chiefs are planning to dismiss Bowyer and appoint a new manager.

One key factor is that the ex-Charlton Athletic boss has a tense relationship with Craig Gardner, who was appointed technical director by the club last summer.

Bowyer has just over 12 months remaining on his contract at St. Andrew’s.

The Blues appointed the Englishman as their manager a year ago following the departure of Aitor Karanka.

In his first season in charge, Bowyer secured an 18th-placed finish in the Championship.

However, there has been little to no improvement this year, with the club currently 20th in the table with one game of the season remaining.

Birmingham are winless in their last five league fixtures following a 1-1 draw with Cardiff City on Saturday.

Speaking to club media post-match (1 May), Bowyer said he was "disappointed" by the result but not by his team's performance.

The Blues welcome Blackburn Rovers to St. Andrew's on Saturday in what could be the final game of Bowyer's tenure.

Bowyer has won 17 of his 58 games in charge of Birmingham and has a point-per-game average of just 1.16.
