Mauricio Pochettino is keen on the possibility of managing Aston Villa as he plots a Premier League return, sources have told Football Insider.

The Englishman has subsequently been appointed the new Chelsea manager while Pochettino remains eager to return to management.

Aston Villa

It is believed the former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain boss is keen on the right project and is not interested only in joining a Champions League club.

Pochettino has reportedly already turned down an approach from French club OGC Nice.

However, he would be very open to transforming the fortunes of a Villa side that have struggled to make the most of the vast investment of owners Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris.

The Premier League club lost three of their first four Premier League matches of the season and manager Steven Gerrard was booed by a section of supporters after their 1-0 defeat to West Ham last month.

They subsequently rallied with a 1-0 home win over Southampton last week (16 September) but the international break has stifled any potential momentum gathered with that victory.

Gerrard has failed to make a noticeable improvement on last season so far in the new campaign despite a sizable summer outlay which exceeded £60million (as per Transfermarkt).

Aston Villa

Diego Carlos, Philippe Coutinho, Boubacar Kamara, and Leander Dendoncker are among the new arrivals as Villa strive to better their 14th-place finish in 2021-22.

Aston Villa face Leeds United after the international break (2 October).
