Middlesbrough are plotting a move to sign QPR goalkeeper Joe Lumley on a free transfer, Football Insider understands.

The 26-year-old is out of contract next month, although QPR remain in talks with him over a potential new deal.

However, a recruitment source has told Football Insider Boro are hoping to take advantage of his contractual situation.

The shot-stopper has played backup to Seny Dieng for most of this season, with just five Championship appearances under his belt.

He also had temporary spells at Gillingham and then Doncaster Rovers between October and December.

The keeper replaced the injured Jack Bonham at Gillingham for two games before joining Donny for another emergency loan later in November.

He ended up playing nine times during his spell at the Keepmoat Stadium, with six wins under his belt.

Lumley returned to QPR in December and quickly became Mark Warburton's second-choice shot-stopper.

He was promoted into the starting XI for the 3-0 win over Coventry last month.

The keeper also featured against Middlesbrough and Swansea following Dieng's red card versus Boro.

A graduate of QPR's youth system, Lumley has played 77 times in the Championship to date.

His potential availability has caught the eye of Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock, who is in the market for another keeper this summer.

Fulham loanee Marcus Bettinelli was Warnock's first-choice shot-stopper this term, with 42 appearances under his belt.

Meanwhile, Jordan Archer is set to be out of contract this summer after joining on a short-term deal in January.

In other news, Middlesbrough are in the hunt to sign Sheffield Wednesday star.
