Oxford United are in advanced talks to sign Dungannon Swifts midfielder Oisin Smyth, Football Insider understands.

The U's have been tracking the Northern Ireland Under-21 international for some time and they are trying to push through a deal before Monday's transfer deadline.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that a fee has been agreed between the two clubs and the 21-year-old has been given permission to travel to England for talks and a medical.

He is set to join former Irish League players Mark Sykes and Gavin Whyte at the Kassam Stadium, with the latter currently on loan from Cardiff City.

Smyth has enjoyed an impressive campaign with the Swifts and has contributed one goal and five assists in 21 league games.

He was made captain of the club at the end of last season.

In total, the attacking midfielder has contributed eight goals and 10 assists in 85 appearances in the NIFL Premiership.

Smyth joined the Swifts’ youth set-up at the age of 12 and made his senior debut in October 2018 against Warrenpoint Town.

Speaking on Smyth last month, Swifts chairman Keith Boyd said: “Until someone puts their money on the table, he’s not going anywhere."

It would appear Oxford are willing to meet Boyd's demands.

Oxford United are working hard to strengthen their squad on deadline day and have already confirmed the permanent signing of Marcus Browne.

Karl Robinson's side are sixth in League One.
