Southampton have made an enquiry about signing Man United star Dean Henderson this month, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The 24-year-old has made it clear to the United hierarchy he wants a January move after failing to supplant David de Gea as the number one.

A Saints source has now told Football Insider the club have made contact about a potential Henderson deal this month.

Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl wants to recruit another goalkeeper even though he already has three experienced shot-stoppers in the ranks.

Henderson has been identified as a keeper capable of instantly slotting in as the new number one while also providing the potential to develop as well as re-sale value.

United's public stance is that the keeper is not available this month and interim boss Ralf Rangnick has said he wants to keep him for the rest of the season.

But, behind the scenes, Henderson is believed to be pushing for a move and that could lead to a U-turn.

The English shot-stopper had high hopes going into this season after overtaking De Gea in the pecking order at the back end of the last campaign.

But Henderson has struggled for game time, with his only two appearances coming in the League Cup and a Champions League dead rubber.

The keeper has a contract that runs until 2025 after signing a lucrative five-year contract worth more than £100,000-a-week 18 months ago.

At St Mary's Stadium, number one Alex McCarthy, 32, is currently out injured, with Fraser Forster, 33, currently deputising and Willy Caballero, 40, the number three.
