Graham Roberts has declared it already – the Tottenham legend has named Jan Vertonghen as his player of the season.

He oozed praise on his Twitter account today after another dominant display in the centre of the Tottenham defence, even though his side didn't keep a clean sheet against Stoke.

That was more down to a rare error by Hugo Lloris than Vertonghen though, and Roberts called the 30-year-old "Superb", "classy" and an "excellent defender".

Roberts posted his verdict on his personal Twitter page after the three point saw Tottenham level on points with Liverpool with a game in hand.

Football Insider verdict:

It's pretty tough to pick just one Tottenham player out this season. Heung-Min Son has been superb, Harry Kane has been elite, but Christian Eriksen has been on a different planet recently. However, Vertonghen gets overlooked in this talented Tottenham side and he's been absolutely brilliant this season – a rock at the heart of the defence. It's ridiculous how many talented defenders Tottenham have got, with Toby Alderweireld not even making the squad today, Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth to come next season. Roberts is right though, Vertonghen could be the best of them all.
