Thomas Tuchel to 'stay on' with England for Euro 2028: 'It's down to the players'

Published on

Thomas Tuchel isn't fully to blame for England's disappointing exit from the 2026 World Cup after the defeat against Argentina.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the players have to take responsibility for the manner of the loss.

Supporters were absolutely certain that a spot in the final was theirs when Anthony Gordon diverted Morgan Rogers' cross home on Wednesday, 15 July.

But Lionel Messi turned on the charm in the final 10 minutes, assisting both Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez at the Atlanta Stadium.

Soon after full-time, it emerged that the FA would stand by Tuchel, rather than part ways with him, though many are uncertain about that decision.

In fact, the head coach continues to be called out for his mindset, having substituted Gordon for Ezri Konsa in the 72nd minute, but Borson has come to Tuchel's defence.

Thomas Tuchel deserves to take England to Euro 2028

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson attempted to take some of the heat of Tuchel, suggesting that he deserves Euro 2028 to test himself.

I think it's very hard for [Thomas] Tuchel to say that he didn't he didn't contribute to the to them going out," he said.

"I think it was ultimately a pretty bad performance from him at the key time, but the players also have to take responsibility.

"Are we really saying that it was the manager's decision to camp out on the edge of the penalty area for thirty-five minutes? I suspect it wasn't.

"So, 'Should he be fired?', I think is the question first, before how much would it cost. You can't keep changing manager every five minutes.

"I think it's perfectly reasonable that he stays on and does the Euros [in 2028]."

England fans fume at Pep Guardiola reveal

In the same story about Tuchel being safe at St George's Park, it was also revealed that the Three Lions had an agreement with Pep Guardiola.

It is understood that the former Man City boss had a verbal agreement with England, only for the move to fall through two years ago.

Supporters would have absolutely loved to have seen Guardiola come aboard after a decade of trophy-winning seasons in the Premier League.

But it wasn't to be, and now a growing number of frustrated and upset fans are calling for Tuchel's head, rather than wanting to give him another chance.
