Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has not made it any secret that he is looking to snap up a new goalkeeper and he must make a move for Manchester United's Sergio Romero.

The Magpies were heavily linked with a move for a shot stopper over the summer, and Karl Darlow confirmed that the only reason he has remained with the club is because the club saw a deal fall through, meaning his proposed move to Middlesbrough was cancelled.

However Benitez now has a chance to secure exactly what he is looking for; an experienced goalkeeper with top flight action under his belt, and from an English giant no less.

That is because Manchester United's Romero, a bench warmer for the Red Devils, is reported by the Mail to be looking to leave Old Trafford in search of first team action.

The 30-year-old is said to be worried about his place in Argentina's World Cup squad and is hoping that by securing a move elsewhere, where he will be the first choice keeper, he will guarantee his place in the starting XI next summer.

Desperate for action - music to Benitez's ears

The Mail's report states that Romero is fed up of sitting behind De Gea in the pecking order, and recognises that he has no chance of usurping the Spaniard.

He has just four appearances under his belt this season, and is desperate to see himself handed more game time.

It is said that he would even be willing to drop to a club whose stature is not at the same level as Manchester United, which will be music to Benitez's ears.

The opportunity to continue playing in the Premier League, where he has made just six appearances, would be a huge draw, as would the chance to play under the Spanish boss.

Keeping Benitez happy

Benitez publicly vocalised his frustrations at the club's summer transfer action, and fans can expect to hear the same if Newcastle fail to splash the cash in January.

The manager is one of the club's biggest assets and him being unhappy will just see uncertainty over his future ramp up.

Romero is exactly what he has been looking for and pulling out all the stops to secure his signing would no doubt satiate the manager's desires somewhat.

A happy Benitez is the best thing the club can ask for - it is time to give him what he wants.

Drop the axe on Darlow

Currently the first choice between the sticks after usurping Rob Elliot, it is the former Nottingham Forest man who deserves to be axed not just from the starting XI, but from the Newcastle squad entirely.

He has shown his frailties in recent matches, including poor decision making and a lack of command in the 3-2 defeat to Leicester City.

Rob Elliot has the experience under his belt and would provide the club more than Darlow would both on and off the field, and it is for that reason the 27-year-old needs to be offloaded in favour of Romero.
