Tottenham player ratings v Real Madrid: Regular starter completely invisible - must be questioned
COMMENT By Russell Edge
Tottenham will travel back to England from Spain with a point after they frustrated the current holders Real Madrid in their Champions League clash on Tuesday.
Raphael Varane turned the ball into his own net while under heavy pressure from Harry Kane to give Spurs a first half lead in the north London club's first visit to the Bernabeu since a 4-0 thrashing back in 2011.
However, Mauricio Pochettino's side were unable to hold out until half time as Cristiano Ronaldo confidently converted a penalty after a foul from Serge Aurier on Toni Kroos just four minutes before the break.
However, despite having the lion's share of the possession, Real Madrid were unable to break down Tottenham, who have goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to thank after he pulled off some impressive saves to deny the Real Madrid attack.
Likewise the Spanish giants had Keylor Navas, returning from an injury suffered on international duty, to thank for keeping them in the match, as he denied red hot striker Harry Kane on more than one occasion.
So how did Spurs' players get on on Tuesday night?
Here, Football Insider has analysed and rated each of them, including one man who will be lucky to find himself near the starting XI any time soon.

Hugo Lloris - 9
As it so happens, the list starts off with Tottenham's man of the match.
Simply put, without Lloris between the sticks, Spurs would be going home with nothing.
He was outstanding against the Spanish giants, pulling off some remarkable saves to keep their attack at bay.
Not only was he a first class shot stopper on Tuesday, he commanded his box, marshalled his defence and was pretty much unflappable in the air.
As for the penalty, he committed to the wrong side, but as Ronaldo has so often shown throughout his career, he can put it to either side, so that was a total lottery.

Toby Alderweireld - 7
As with the whole defence, Alderweireld can say that he managed to keep some of Europe's top attackers quiet for the majority of the match.
He demonstrated his aerial dominance, commanding the box at set pieces, but was caught out by the pace of the Real Madrid down the flanks on occasion.
Still, the way he jostled and harried the opposition meant they found clear cut opportunities at a premium and he should be happy with his night's work.

Davinson Sanchez - 6
Of all the Tottenham defenders, Sanchez looks the least confident, and you can expect Real Madrid to target him if he starts in the return fixture.
He just did not look comfortable with the direct nature of Los Blancos' attack, struggling to deal with their pace and passing precision.
What can be said is that he did not lunge in with silly challenges and kept his composure despite his evident lack of confidence against the top level talent.
More game time against the likes of Real Madrid will only help him learn and develop, but he has some way to come.

Jan Vertonghen - 7
Another top class performance from one of Tottenham's key players.
His presence in defence is a blessing to Mauricio Pochettino, as the manager knows week in, week out, he will see his side marshalled to within an inch of their lives.
He is a true leader at the back, and along with Lloris, ensures that they are tight, compact and as difficult to break down as possible.
However, he loses a mark for some awful play acting which got Cristiano Ronaldo booked.
Despite the size of the Belgian, he fell like a sack of potatoes in an embarrassing show of unsportsmanlike behaviour after what was no more than a slight brush of his hair by the Portuguese winger.

Serge Aurier - 7
It is fair to say that the Ivory Coast international's performance had everything in it against Real Madrid.
Returning to the side to continue his run of starting every one of Spurs' Champions League game this season, he went from hero to zero at the Bernabeu.
Aurier's cross was the catalyst for Varane to inadvertently turn the ball into his own net, but he was also the one to perform an unnecessary lunge in the penalty box to give away a foul and potentially three points.
However, the rest of his performance was impressive as he matched up to Marcelo and the rest of the Real Madrid left flank, hence the decent mark of 7.

Moussa Sissoko - 7
Reinstated to the side to support Aurier down the right flank, the French international continues to work his way back into the hearts of Tottenham supporters.
A never ending ball of energy, his rampaging runs actually caused the Real Madrid defence to panic, and although his final ball was lacking, it was enough to give the home side something to think about.
Down the other end of the pitch he was also useful, helping out in defence and harrying the Madrid players into a mistake, or at least prevent an attacking pass.
The away fans were singing his name at full time, and he can now consider himself a fully established member of the Spurs squad.

Eric Dier - 5
Eric Dier makes writing these player ratings incredibly hard, as he rarely does anything of note.
The same applies to his performance on Tuesday, where fans might have been questioning if there had been a misprint on the team sheet.
In the side to break down the opposition attacks, Real Madrid passed him by like he was not even there, as he failed to stamp any sort of authority on the game.
His ability at the very top level has come under question before and after this outing it should do yet again.
Still, without Victor Wanyama or Mousa Dembele fighting for his spot in the line up, Pochettino does not have many other options.

Harry Winks - 8
The world is starting to take notice of young Harry Winks and it must be said that the praise is well deserved.
The 21-year-old did not look out of place against his illustrious opponents, who included Luka Modric and Toni Kroos, both hugely established stars for both club and country.
He just has everything you want from a central midfielder, with a great passing range, the attacking vision, pace and energy.
Yes, his decision making lacks on a rare occasion but when you consider his age, that is something that will only improve with time.
Another impressive performance and after a midfield injury crisis earlier in the season, Pochettino now has a battle for places in the centre of the park.

Christian Eriksen - 5
Not for the first time, Christian Eriksen went missing against a top side.
Whether the opposition know how to mark him out of a game or whether he does not know how to impact a match when faced with a tougher challenge awaits to be seen, but it was a really disappointing performance from the Danish international.
He did have one shot which he blazed wide when well positioned but other than that there were few incidents to note, which Tottenham will be feeling pretty disappointed about.
Must do better next time out.

Fernando Llorente - 6
By no means a shining performance from the Spaniard, who will be lucky to find himself anywhere near the starting XI after Tuesday's outing.
While he worked relatively hard in the first half, he was completely absent for the second, and it took his substitution to realise he was not already sitting on the substitute's bench.
Pochettino wanted to try something different but really the gamble seemed to have no real effect on the game, which would have been disappointing for all the fans to see.
Perhaps his fitness is lacking, and if that is the case then it is back to playing a bit part role, as he is never going to usurp Harry Kane.

Harry Kane - 7
The world must be ending, as Harry Kane has now gone two games without scoring a goal.
However, unlike against Bournemouth over the weekend, the England striker did all he could to net at the Bernabeu, but was denied by some top quality goalkeeping from Keylor Navas.
He was a constant thorn in the side of Real Madrid, not only posing a threat in front of goal but terrorising the flanks with the ball at his feet.
If he had scored, the media would have been lapping his performance up.
Perhaps then, it is best for Spurs he failed to find the net, as the last thing they need is any more interest in their star asset.

Danny Rose - 6
What a welcome sight this was, not just for Tottenham fans, but for everyone.
After nine months out, Danny Rose finally returned to a football pitch, and what a place to make your return - from Sunderland's Stadium of Light to Real Madrid's Bernabeu.
In reality he actually saw very little action but the minutes under his belt will do him a world of good as he looks to fight Ben Davies for the left back slot.
Heung-min Son - N/A
Was given one minute of normal time and the four minutes of added time to try an make an impression.
Quite simply, he did not make said impression.
