Tottenham star Sergio Reguilon will undergo tests on Tuesday that will determine if his season is over or not, Football Insider understands.

The left-back, 25, sustained a groin injury in training ahead of his team's recent 3-1 Premier League win over Leicester City.

Antonio Conte has admitted he does not know the seriousness of Reguilon's problem and a Spurs source has updated to Football Insider he will have have further tests on Tuesday.

One potential scenario is that Spurs make a call for the Spain international to sit out the rest of the campaign, and begin an enforced spell of rehabilitation.

Reguilon had been featuring regularly under Conte before his injury, starting five of the six league games he was available for before the Leicester match.

Ryan Sessegnon has proved a fine replacement for the senior man after recovering from a hamstring injury of his own.

He has started the last three league matches and impressed once again in Saturday's 1-1 draw at quadruple-chasing Liverpool.

The battle for the left-back spot has been an intriguing sub-plot since Conte took over and immediately implemented his preferred 3-4-3 system.

Reguilon has made 67 appearances for Spurs across two seasons, including 22 Premier League starts among 31 appearances this term.

But Sessegnon had emerged as the first choice left side wing-back in Conte's team before suffering a hamstring injury in the middle of last month.

That opened the door for Reguilon to return to the starting XI but, tellingly, he was dropped for the goalless draw against Brentford prior to his injury.

It comes amid a backdrop of speculation about Reguilon's future.

A return to Spain has previously been mooted for the six-time Spain international.

He has showed glimpses of top quality during his two years in north London without consistently hitting the levels of the Premier League's outstanding left-backs.
