Paul Robinson has tipped Tottenham to hand Erik Lamela a new contract in light of his "amazing" performances in recent weeks.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane number one said the 29-year-old "has never let the team down" and is always "ready when called upon".

Lamela has less than 16 months left on his contract in north London, having last put pen to paper on new terms in July 2018.

He has four goals and one assist to his name in 29 appearances this season, of which 13 have been starts.

However, Robinson believes the club may U-turn on that decision in light of Lamela's recent form.

"Lamela has been amazing over the past few weeks," he told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

"I expect them to be in talks with him over a new deal, he has been there a long while now.

"He has never let the team down. He does not play every week but he keeps himself fit and is ready when called upon.

"It was a sensational goal against Arsenal last week, absolutely sensational. He's a fantastic player."

Tottenham

Lamela will miss Tottenham's trip to Aston Villa tonight after he was sent off for a second bookable offence in last Sunday's North London derby loss at the Emirates.

The fixture appears must-win for Jose Mourinho's side if they have any hope of finishing in the top-four this season.
