McAvennie backs Aston Villa to beat Arsenal to 'massive' Buendia signing after update today
Frank McAvennie claims it would be a ‘great statement’ if Aston Villa can beat Arsenal to the signing of Emiliano Buendia.
The former Villa hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, questioned why the Norwich attacker would want to join the Gunners.
Football Insider revealed Villa are confident they have edged ahead of Arsenal in the race to sign Buendia after their latest talks and a club source has added in the last 24 hours that progress has been made.
This comes after this site revealed on 25th May that Villa had opened preliminary talks over a deal for the 24-year-old.
At that time, Arsenal were reportedly the frontrunners for the attacker after they tried to sign him in the January window.
It is understood the up-front price for Buendia will be less than the reported £40million sum Norwich are demanding.

McAvennie insists it would be a ‘great statement’ if Villa can get a deal for Buendia over the line.
“Arsenal are in complete disarray at the moment,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“That said, Arsenal are a massive club and they have the pulling power of London. Equally, Villa is a massive club.
“They weren’t that far away from each other last season but it was more positive for Villa.
“I don’t know about Arsenal’s finances but I’m not sure they can win a bidding war with Villa.
“It would be a massive statement if Villa can get that one over the line.”
Buendia scored 15 goals and picked up 17 assists last season as Norwich romped to the Championship title.
He joined the Canaries from Getafe in 2018.
