McAvennie baffled by Lundstram after Rangers made 'big fuss' in the summer

Frank McAvennie

Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Frank McAvennie has questioned the signing of John Lundstram after he "dropped off the map" at Rangers.

The former Celtic hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, is surprised the midfielder hasn't played a bigger role at Ibrox.

Lundstram, 27, played 90 minutes as Rangers drew with Lyon on Thursday (9 December).

This was the first time he had completed a full game since 24 October.

The midfielder, who joined on a free transfer last summer (2021) featured regularly at the start of the season but has been limited to cameo appearances in recent weeks.

McAvennie has been left baffled by Lundstram's lack of minutes after Rangers made "a big fuss" of signing him.

"Where is he? I haven't heard anything about him for weeks," McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

"He's dropped off the map. Rangers made a big fuss of signing him in the summer and to me, it seems like he never gets a game.

"I know he's scored a couple of goals so clearly he can hack it up here.

"I thought he might have a big role under Gerrard. They are both scousers.

"Obviously there is more to it than that but I thought Gerrard might get the best out of him.

"I remember Sheffield United fans being happy he was leaving, that was never a good sign."

Rangers

Lundstram has made 21 total appearances for Rangers this season.

Speaking in September, Steven Gerrard called the midfielder an “absolute powerhouse” and a “fantastic player”.
