'New Goldson' may already be in Rangers ranks as talks underway - pundit
Noel Whelan has suggested Rangers will promise Leon King first-team football in a bid to seal a new contract deal.
The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Light Blues may tell the 17-year-old he is set to become “the new Connor Goldson”.
As revealed by Football Insider last week (30 November), Rangers are opening contract talks to tie King down amid interest from Manchester United and Newcastle.
The defender’s current terms are set to expire next summer.
This site also revealed last Thursday (2 December) Goldson has turned down a new contract offer, with his current deal also up at the end of the season.
Whelan suggested Rangers could promote King into the senior side to convince him to sign a new deal.

Asked how Rangers could convince King to commit, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “The first way of enticing a player to stay is by saying: ‘Connor Goldson is going and you’re going to be our replacement.
“‘You’re gonna be getting first-team football. You’re the new Connor Goldson, we don’t need to go into the market, we’ve got you. We guarantee you that you will be playing and starting.’
“If he’s wanted by these sorts of teams then he’s got to have a certain amount of quality to him.
“If he goes to those teams, he’s not going to be starting in the first team. I very much doubt it. He will be in the under-23s and working hard.
“So if Rangers hold him in high regard and see him as a quality player, then you’ve got to start putting him into the first team, do you not?
“That could be the only way to entice him to sign another contract.”
King has played twice for the senior side at Ibrox so far.
Meanwhile, Goldson has 188 appearances under his belt for the Glasgow giants.
