Frank McAvennie has claimed that Shane Duffy will only join West Ham “if he wants money” after Celtic held talks with Brighton over the defender.
The Hammers and Hoops legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, was adamant that the 28-year-old should swap the Premier League for the Scottish Premiership to win trophies with Celtic.
The Hammers, West Brom and Newcastle are all interested in signing the centre-half who has fallen out-of-favour at the Amex Stadium under Graham Potter.
Celtic have opened talks over a potential loan move and Football Insider understands that the player would prefer to move to Parkhead ahead of his other main suitors.
Duffy, who made 21 appearances last season, has three years remaining on his current deal with the Seagulls having signing a long-term contract extension in October 2018.
When asked by Football Insider who he expects the Republic of Ireland international to sign for, McAvennie said:
“By all accounts there are a host of clubs that are after him at the moment but if he wants to win trophies then he will go to Celtic and if he wants money then he will go to West Ham. I think the West Ham fans will forgive me for saying that he will not win anything there at the moment with the team that they have got.
“If it is about money he will move to West Ham but I am sure the boy has made enough money over the years.
“A very good player but I would love him to go to Celtic because it is such an important year and he would go down in the history books if he is part of the team that wins 10-in-a-row.”
