McAvennie issues Celtic fans warning after new boy likened to Jimmy Johnstone
Frank McAvennie insists Owen Moffat must earn comparisons to Jimmy Johnstone after an impressive start to pre-season with Celtic.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Hoops icon admitted he can’t wait to see how the youngster develops this season.
Moffat, 19, scored in Ange Postecoglou’s first game, a 3-1 friendly win over Sheffield Wednesday.
The midfielder has been at Celtic since he was eight and progressed through the club’s various youth sides.
He is yet to make his senior debut for the Hoops but that may not be far away after his pre-season performances.
Johnstone was a Lisbon Lion and made 529 appearances for Celtic over a trophy-laden 13-year spell

McAvennie insists Moffat has some way to go to earn a real comparison to the Parkhead legend.
“He’s the lad everyone’s calling ‘the next Jimmy Johnstone’, really?” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“If the boy has talent then let him play. He’s only going to get stronger and stronger the more he’s out there.
“It’s a big man’s game now and you have to adapt to that world quickly if you are a young player.
“This guy has to prove himself and earn those comparisons to Johnstone.
“I’m looking forward to watching him play a bit more but let’s not get carried away.
“The last thing the kid needs is pressure like that.
“If he’s getting minutes now then Postecoglou has plans for him. He probably won’t throw him in straight away.
“He’ll get a chance, he has to take it.”
Celtic’s season gets underway with a Champions League clash against FC Midtjylland next week.
This will be Postecoglou’s first taste of competitive football as Celtic boss.
