McAvennie: Postecoglou must start 'incredible' Abada v Midtjylland after what I've seen at Celtic

Frank McAvennie insists Liel Abada must start against FC Midtjylland and Hearts as Celtic look to start their season with positive results.

The Hoops icon, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, was blown away by the attacker’s debut performance last week.

Abada, 19, signed for Celtic on 14th July and scored just days later on his first outing at Parkhead.

He followed up a loose ball and smashed the ball past Jonas Lossl in the Midtjylland goal.

The game finished 1-1 after a Vasilis Barkas howler and Abada may be called on again for Wednesday’s second leg.

McAvennie claims Celtic have been looking for someone with striker’s instincts and Abada may fit the bill.

“He doesn’t seem to be short of confidence,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“I’m delighted for the boy. He followed the ball in very well and got the reward.

“That’s the kind of thing I’ve been shouting at Leigh Griffiths, just get in there.

“This lad is a winger who can play up front and so far, I’m happy he’s been brought in, he looks incredible.

“We need all the confidence we can get and he looks the part so far.

“Hopefully he starts against FC Midtjylland and Hearts. He has to.”

Abada joined Celtic from Israeli side Maccabi Petah Tikva after three years at the club.

The Hoops’ 2021-22 league campaign will get underway on Saturday with a trip to Tynecastle first up for Ange Postecoglou.
