McAvennie tells Celtic fans who's really to blame after 'massive error'

Frank McAvennie has told Celtic fans to get off David Turnbull’s back after his error against Bayer Leverkusen.

The Parkhead icon, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims the blame lies with Anthony Ralston.

During last week’s game against Leverkusen, Turnbull missed the ball while trying to clear inside his own box.

This allowed a cross to come in and handed the German side the first of their four goals.

The Hoops have now conceded four goals in both of their Europa League group games this season.

Ralston was playing at right-back but was out of position as Celtic failed to clear from a corner.

As a result, McAvennie claimed the blame should lie with the defender rather than with Turnbull, who was forced to cover.

“Turnbull should not have been in that position,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He was in the right-back position and Ralston should have been there.

“How many times can I say it? These defenders are not good enough. They just aren’t good enough.

“Turnbull made a massive error, yes. But get off his back. He should not have been there.

“He was covering because Ralston, as usual, was out of position.

“These are the things we need to fix.”

Turnbull has been ever-present since he joined Celtic last summer and has notched six goals this season.

The midfielder swept the end of season awards ceremony and ended the season in excellent form.
