McAvennie tells Celtic to beat Rangers to Souttar signing after rave review from McManus

Frank McAvennie has suggested Celtic should try and beat Rangers to the signing of Hearts defender John Souttar.

The former Hoops hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists the defender would instantly improve Celtic.

Football Insider revealed on 16 November that Nottingham Forest are looking to sign Souttar in January but an Ibrox source has updated today that Rangers as well as Stoke City are also keeping tabs.

The 25-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season.

He also impressed against Celtic on Thursday (2 December) evening with ex-Hibs man and Record Sport columnist Tam McManus claiming Souttar “walks into both Old Firm teams”.

McAvennie wouldn’t complain if Celtic pursued a deal for Souttar in January.

“Well there is talk of Celtic getting a defender, isn’t there?” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Obviously there is the talk about Carter-Vickers staying now, just from what I read in the papers.

“But I look at someone like Souttar, who is definitely proven in Scotland.

“He also had a great game for Scotland recently and scored that goal against Denmark.

“Rangers keep being linked with him and that makes sense. Their defence hasn’t quite been the same this season.

“I think if Celtic want to improve, we need a defender who can come in and immediately improve us.

“Souttar could be that player.”

Souttar scored a last-gasp winner in Hearts’ win over Celtic on the opening day of the season (31 July).

Hearts remain third in the Premiership after their loss to the Hoops.
