Sources: Nottingham Forest line up January move for Rangers target Souttar

Nottingham Forest are lining up a move for Scotland hero John Souttar ahead of January as they look to beat Rangers to his signature, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

Souttar has made a fine start to the season for Hearts and scored the Tartan Army’s first goal in their memorable 2-0 win against Denmark on Monday night.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Forest are hoping to steal a march on their rivals by making an early move to bring Souttar, 25, to the City Ground.

The centre-back is out of contract at the end of the season and Hearts have been unable to secure him to a new deal.

The Edinburgh outfit could be forced to cash in on him in January rather than lose him for nothing at the end of the season.

Rangers and Stoke City are also keeping tabs on the defender as they look to strengthen in the upcoming window.

Forest are set to be in the market for defensive reinforcements as they look to boost their promotion push.

The Championship big guns are 13th in the division – four points adrift of sixth spot – after conceding 22 goals in their 17 league matches to date.

Souttar has been a key player for club and country this season.

He has made 15 appearances for Hearts in all competitions, weighing in with three goals from his defensive position.

Most memorably of all, Souttar gave Scotland’s World Cup dream a huge boost on Monday by heading in the all-important first goal on a fairytale return to the national team.
