McCarthy is a 'monster' and the bully boys will be no match at Celtic - pundit

Frank McAvennie claims James McCarthy will run through brick walls for Celtic once he is fully fit.

The Parkhead icon, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted as the midfielder made his first few Hoops appearances.

Celtic announced that McCarthy had joined the club on a free transfer along with Joe Hart on 3rd August.

The 43-cap Republic of Ireland international was released by Crystal Palace at the end of his contract in May.

McCarthy is a boyhood Celtic fan and has further Premier League experience with Wigan Athletic and Everton.

Since signing, McCarthy has racked up 30 minutes as a Celtic player in substitute appearances against Hearts and AZ Alkmaar.

McAvennie can’t wait to see a fully fit McCarthy gracing the Hoops midfield.

“I’m looking forward to McCarthy getting fit and having a run in the team,” McAvennie told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.

“He’s a stopper, everyone says he’s a footballer but let me tell you he can tackle as well.

“He will not get bullied, he’s a monster, you can see from minute one that he loves the club.

“If he’s anything like me he will run through walls for Celtic. I can’t wait for him to get in the team.

“I would love to see him, Callum McGregor and David Turnbull in the midfield.”

Celtic defeated Alkmaar 2-0 and put themselves in a good position to qualify for the Europa League group stage.

The return leg is next Thursday with the Hoops facing the first Old Firm of the season days later.
