McLeish: Gerrard and McAllister will be thrilled by 'huge' Rangers development
Alex McLeish has admitted Wednesday’s victory over Livingston in the Scottish League Cup was “huge” for Rangers.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers manager insisted the win will have given Steven Gerrard and his staff a massive confidence boost after a tough couple of weeks.
The Gers beat Livi 2-0 thanks to goals from Kemar Roofe and Alfredo Morelos.
The Light Blues have progressed one stage further than they did last season, having been beaten by St Mirren 3-2.
Rangers came into the tie off the back of a 1-1 draw with Motherwell, while they lost 2-0 to Lyon the game before.
McLeish admitted the Gers had come under fire for their recent displays.

However, he insisted Wednesday’s win would be a major “lift” around Ibrox.
McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I’m telling you, honestly, that that will have lifted Stevie and his staff.
“Big Gary (McAllister) and the rest of them, that would have lifted them big time. They’re in the semi-final, they actually played a good game.
“Our man Roofe comes to the rescue. He’s definitely got an eye for goals, as he showed last season.
“This is a huge result, and also a huge performance. In the last two or three weeks, everybody’s been saying they haven’t been at their mercurial best of last season.
“But they’re finding a rhythm and I felt that was as well as they’ve played this season.”
Rangers last won the League Cup during the 2010/11 season.
They were beaten by Celtic in the final back in the 2019/20 campaign.
