Alex McLeish has admitted he has been blown away by Illan Meslier’s performances at Leeds United this season.
The former Scotland boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted he could not believes the shot-stopper is still only 21.
The Frenchman kept his 10th Premier League clean sheet on Sunday against Manchester United.
The shot-stopper’s highlight was a fingertip save from a Marcus Rashford free-kick.
He made a total of four saves and two aerial claims [Whoscored] against the Red Devils.
McLeish singled out Meslier’s willingness to come out and claim the ball as his standout trait.
McLeish told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “What a great goalkeeper Illan Meslier is. It’s just incredible for such a young man to be playing at the level he’s at in the Premier League.
“He’s made some amazing saves but what I like about him is he comes for things. Some goalies are rooted to their line and they’ll rely on the centre-half to win the header against his opponent.
“But the goalkeeper has got a chance to make a wee run, jump up and Meslier’s a big guy. His arms, when they’re stretched straight up, are two, three feet bigger than any of the centre-halves could jump. That’s something I’ve always asked of my goalkeepers.
“I think if a goalkeeper does that, and he does it frequently, those crosses that come in, you think that’s a dangerous cross and he just comes out to pluck it out the air. He has been supreme in that kind of goalkeeping.
“Also, he’s partial to stopping some magnificent strikes on goal, His athleticism is fantastic and. I just can’t believe that he’s in his early-20s.”
In other news, a transfer offer has been tabled for rising Leeds United star.
