McLeish suggests Rangers contract talks 'derailed' after major twist
Alex McLeish has claimed Steven Gerrard’s exit could “derail” contract talks and other potential deals at Rangers.
The former Ibrox boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted the Gers board could face setbacks in negotiations due to the change of manager.
Gerrard left Rangers on Thursday of last week to replace Dean Smith at Aston Villa.
Several high-profile players, including Connor Goldson, Scott Arfield, Steven Davis and Allan McGregor are out of contract at the end of the season.
Gerrard confirmed last month Rangers were still in talks to tie Goldson down.
However, McLeish insisted the change of manager could be a big blow to the Gers’ hopes of getting deals done swiftly.

Asked if Gerrard’s exit would impact things like contract talks, McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Yes. It does derail some of the issues that are there.
“When there is a challenge to be met at any football club, you want to be really up for it. Rangers, having lost Steven, maybe have lost that bit of momentum with things like that.
“It probably won’t go unseen by the board. They will want to keep the wheels moving and turning. Issues like contracts and stuff, they won’t want to lose any momentum in those kinds of situations.”
In contrast to Goldson, Arfield confirmed earlier this month contract talks are yet to get underway.
However, he insisted he is keen to prove his worth and earn himself a new deal at Ibrox.
