Kieran Maguire: This is 'true reason' Gerrard quit Rangers after Ibrox source reveal
Steven Gerrard may have quit Rangers because they were not able to offer him a transfer budget that matched his ambitions.
That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the timing and manner of Gerrard’s departure.
Gerrard’s exit to Aston Villa after three-and-a-half years in Glasgow was confirmed by the club on 11 November.
An Ibrox source has told Football Insider that Gerrard had become frustrated that transfer funds had dried up.
The £2million arrival of Juninho Bacuna was the Scottish champions’ only fee-paying signing of the summer.
Maguire compared the spending of the two clubs and suggested that Villa’s may have proved decisive in luring him south of the border.

“The most recent account from a non-Covid year show Rangers spent £11m in 2019-20 compared to £156m at Villa,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.
“It does allow you to fish in a different pond. Steven Gerrard wants to progress and that might be the true reason he’s chosen to depart.
“He will be disappointed that they didn’t qualify for the Champions League. He may feel that’s linked with their failure to recruit last summer.
“Having achieved that title triumph, he believed there was scope to grow the club further. But that would have required investment.
“Steven Gerrard is a smart individual. He will be aware of the budget that was available for them
“He may have felt he was limited in terms of what he could do.”
