McLeish tips Aston Villa statement after source's Smith reveal
Alex McLeish has expressed his surprise after hearing the latest on Dean Smith’s Aston Villa future.
The former Villa boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to an update from a club source.
Football Insider revealed on (14 September) from an Aston Villa source that Smith is fighting for his job and the sack is a possibility if he cannot inspire a turnaround ahead of the next international break.
A Villa source revealed Smith’s relationship with chief executive Christian Purslow has weakened following the departures of coaches John Terry and Richard O’Kelly.
The Villains are 12th in the Premier League after only winning one of their opening four games.
McLeish tipped Villa to release a statement backing Smith if “rumours” about his future persist.

“Any time I’ve had success in my football career, it’s always been because of a positive relationship with the people upstairs,” McLeish told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.
“I was surprised to hear this about Smith. It seems like he’s doing a good job.
“I know my old player Alan Hutton thinks very highly of him. It was a surprise.
“The surprise is that nothing is surprising in football. He has been given a lot of financial support from the board over the last couple of years.
“That was to get them to the status of a permanent Premier League club. It’s surprising he has been given that support and then there are rumours.
“They need to make a statement or let Dean get on with it because that is hampering the manager’s thought process.”
